This story begins with Nick, a 9-year-old boy, living with his mother, an abusive alcoholic and drug addict. Nick's searching the house looking for something to eat. Cold, hungry, and all alone, this short story tells about his struggle to survive in New York. The only person in the world who loves him and is always kind to him is his Aunt Sophia, who lives across the country in LA. He calls her from time to time, and although she wants him, the recently widowed mother of six can't afford to fly to New York to get him. So,she prays for him instead.After being passed around the court system and taken to three foster homes, Nick decides to leave New York and find his Aunt Sophia, where he is welcomed as part of her family and loved for the first time in his life. This well-written short story will whet your appetite for more of the Donatelli family and provides a bit of insight into the main character of the first book in the series, Maxine.

Short story. Sad story about a young boy trying to find a better life.
was good and well written. enjoyed the plot and characters. was worth the money of purchase and time to read. bought entire series
My grandkids have enjoyed reading this book over and over. I also enjoy having them read it to me.
This story holds their intrest and makes reading every day fun.
Though much of what is contained in this prequel is in the series. There is more detail in this book, it was nice to read it in a separate context. Really enjoyed it and the series.
Nick is a young teen who lives with an alcoholic Mother and constantly is hungry and beaten because of it. He finally flees to an aunt on the other side of the country. Her love and that of his cousins redeem him.
It took a lot of courage for Nick to runaway and make it to his Aunt's house. I love his strength. His mother should have been locked up....
I believe had this story been a little longer, I may have rated this book a little higher. With that said, I did enjoy this very brief intro to this fictional family. It is easy to love Nick. This is the kind of tragic yet determined character you can't . help but love.
